Docklands is Melbourne’s fastest growing inner-city area according to recent ABS statistics.

According to the ABS data, Docklands population grew around 8.8 per cent, or by 714 people, between 2014 and 2015 and currently sits around 8871.

Docklands saw the highest population growth percentage-wise, followed by the CBD (8.3 per cent) and Southbank (8 per cent).

Overall, the Melbourne municipality grew by 5.6 per cent, or 6813 people, between 2014 and 2015 and greater Melbourne was Australia’s fastest growing capital city, with a 2.1 per cent increase in population.

An average of 1760 people were added to Melbourne’s population each week, totalling 91,600 people in 2014-15.

According to Planning Minister Richard Wynne, the government is planning for Melbourne’s rapid population growth.

“We need to make sure housing is available to everyone, delivering housing options throughout the city with the access to education, health services and transport people deserve,” Mr Wynne said.

“We are the world’s most liveable city, the country’s sporting capital and Victoria is the education state – people are naturally drawn to Melbourne and we need to plan accordingly.”

The government says it is planning for future growth in a variety of ways.
